From Social Computing to Reflexive Collective Intelligence
The IEML research program promotes a radical innovation in the notation and processing of semantics. IEML (Information Economy MetaLanguage) is a regular language that provides new methods for semantic interoperability, semantic navigation, collective categorization and self-referential collective intelligence. This research program is compatible with the major standards of the Web of data and is in tune with the current trends in social computing.
The paper explains the philosophical relevance of this new langage, expounds its syntactic and semantic structures and ponders its possible implications for the growth of collective intelligence in cyberspace.
Keywords: collective intelligence, IEML, semantic space, semantic tagging, semantic interoperability, metalanguage, web of data, philosophy.

From Social Computing to Reflexive Collective Intelligence: The IEML Research Program
Mathematical Theory of IEML Semantic Space
Mathematical foundations of IEML
We propose in this article a formal description of IEML, a novel language designed to be used within computational intelligence and collective intelligence domains. Its target applications are :
collaborative semantic tagging (`balisage’) of any idea or concept
available on the Web (blogs, images, software, documents, data in
general) ;
collaborative semantic search, including comparison, merging and
navigation ;
interoperable modeling and simulation in social sciences, manage-
ment, design, gaming and digital storytelling.
The emphasis is put on the operations that can be performed on IEML expressions. The combination of these operations leads to automatic generation and transformation of IEML expressions and to automatic generation and transformation of semantic networks of IEML expressions.
IEML has been designed with two goals in mind : provide a prac- tically unlimited method of semantic expression while remaining well within the limits of modern computation.

IEML : Achievements and Research Program
This technical report summarizes the research done at the Canada Research Chair in Collective Intelligence at the university of Ottawa since 2002 and explain the IEML research program for the years to come.
In order to scientifically study the human collective intelligence and to relate it to the Internet, the problem of language diversity and incompatibility of classification systems used in databases and social networks must be addressed. As a solution to this problem, I have invented a system of semantic notation, called Information Economy Meta Language (IEML). Although IEML is a new concept in the Semantic Web area, it is compatible with its major standards. This new formal language allows to map and to perform computations on the processes involved in social cognition within a practically infinite semantic space. Building on the successes of past research, an international research and development network principally concerned with semantic tagging will be launched in 2009. This network has three primary objectives : 1) to augment lexical units and natural language support of the IEML dictionary ; 2) to develop a set of open-source semantic agents allowing users to share information expressed (modeled, marked-up) in IEML and construct dynamic maps of their collective intelligence ; 3) train specialists in the usage of IEML in the context of an international school of semantic tagging.

A new site for IEML discussion and collaboration
I have started a "twine" called semantic tagging for an open discussion about the IEML-semantic space research program.
semantic tagging will allow us to share link, images, comments, ideas and will connect us with other like-minded people and communities. All interested people can join it. ieml.org will stay open for special announcements and to share the dictionary and the open-source tools.

Third International IEML Workshop
The workshop takes place the 21st and 22nd of March 2008, at the 30 Stewart Street, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, from 9h30 PM to 5PM. The workshop goal is to reach a one year "roadmap" for the people involved into the theoretical and technical development of the IEML initiative.
Two texts in their first versions will be discussed.
One about the service oriented architecture of the IEML initiative, by Andrew Roczniak, the other about a system of automatic generation of semantic links in IEML databases, by Pierre Levy.

A new function in the IEML dictionary !
A new function in the IEML dictionary allows to find automatically the "reverse" (inversion of source and destination of the information flow) of an IEML word, when it exists in the dictionary.
For example, go to gm (malicious gossip) and find the reverse word! All the relations, and several ideas, have a reverse.

SHANE SCHICK
Pierre Lévy asks me, somewhat hopefully, whether I speak French. I do, but not enough to have the kind of conversation I want to have with him, and I say so. He understands. As someone who has spent his life studying collective intelligence, Prof. Lévy has a unique appreciation of how important it is to communicate clearly. That’s why he is trying to create a language that will open up a dialogue between computers that has never existed before.
Prof. Lévy, who holds a research professorship at the University of Ottawa, has been toiling away on what he has called the Information Economy Meta Language (IEML: www.ieml.org) for the better part of 15 years. When you understand the scope of what he’s trying to do, you can see why it may take even longer. Read more...
